Following hot on the heels of his triumphant Future Former Rapper LP, Zilla Rocca hits us with the lead single from his forthcoming album, 96 Mentality. Spy vs. Spy sees the Wrecking Crew rapper team up with Vic Spencer, as the pair dish out some solid bars over a great beat from Ray West. You can stream the track below and expect to hear more news on the album soon. Continue reading “Zilla Rocca ft. Vic Spencer: Spy vs. Spy”
As I reported at the end of last month, a new Sean Price album was looming thanks to a collaboration with Philly producer, Small Professor. 86 Witness arrived in full on Friday and serves as a worthy addition to P’s weighty back catalogue. As alluded to in the title, the album is a homage to 1986 so expect a lot of timely references in the track names and beyond. Unlike some posthumous projects, 86 Witness has a really solid flow to it and is devoid of the clunky sound that plagues other releases made in a similar fashion. It was already a phenomenal year for hip hop, but the last month is seeing a flurry of releases that are pushing the standards even higher. One of them is Curly Castro’s solo effort, TOSH. The album is apparently inspired by George Orwell, Spike Lee and MF Doom, as well as Castro’s own background – West Indies, Philly and Brooklyn – resulting in a richly diverse sound throughout. That diversity is also thanks in part to the range of producers who are involved. There are beats from the likes of Blockhead, Blueprint, Zilla Rocca, Messiah Musik and NASA, as well as features from billy woods, PremRock and ELUCID, among others. When you put all those attributes together with Castro’s own inimitable talents, you get a worthy contender for your end of years lists. The album is available to stream below and you can grab a download over on Bandcamp. Continue reading “Curly Castro: TOSH (Stream)”
Good to see the long-awaited solo album from Zilla Rocca has finally been given life. Future Former Rapper is the culmination of a career which spans 13 years, all of them as a totally independent artist – which is no mean feat given how many fellow independents have been swallowed up or broken beyond repair during that same period.
The album is the perfect showcase for the talents that have kept Zilla afloat through those years and finds him accompanied by some of the artists that he has been associated with during that same time frame.
Guest spots are held by the likes of Armand Hammer, Serengeti and fellow Wrecking Crew representative, Curly Castro, as well as a bunch of high-end production credits from Steel Tipped Dove, Messiah Musik, Disco Vietnam and Small Pro. Future Former Rapper is ready to stream below, with downloads available via Bandcamp. Continue reading “Zilla Rocca: Future Former Rapper (Stream)”

Pleased to see the arrival of the lead single from Zilla Rocca’s long-awaited Future Former Rapper album. For Favors Are Bad News, the Philly artist has drafted in Armand Hammer aka billy woods and ELUCID, who are riding high off their recently released and rightfully acclaimed Paraffin project. This is Zilla’s debut on POW Recordings, the label attached to Passion of the Weiss, where Zilla is a regular contributor. Favors Are Bad News is produced by Disco Vietnam and you can listen to it below. Stay tuned for more news on the album coming soon. Continue reading “Zilla Rocca ft. Armand Hammer: Favors Are Bad News”
New noir hop heaters from Zilla Rocca, as he provides a little something to tide us over until his Future Former Rapper album drops. Hard Boiled is a seven track selection, all with that “snubnose pressed to the back feel to them”, as the man himself explained. Two features from Henry Canyons and Nex Millen, with production coming from The Expert, Messiah Musik, Newstalgia and Zilla. You can stream the EP below, with downloads available via Three Dollar Pistol Music. Continue reading “Zilla Rocca: Hard Boiled EP (Stream)”
The Dead End Hip Hop gang recently premiered the brand new video from Career Crooks. It’s for Crook With a Deal, a sort of reworking of 50’s How To Rob, which is lifted from the Philly duo’s recent Thieving As Long As I’m Breathing album. The video captures those classic masked villain, heist style scenes, as Zilla Rocca raps about jacking various indie hip hop acts. The album is out now on URBNET.
Pleased to be able to bring you the first play of the new single from Zilla Rocca – 2000 Pelle Pelle Flow. Continuing his sporadic series of tribute tracks, the Wrecking Crew MC has turned his sights towards Capone-N-Noreaga’s sophomore release, The Reunion, as well as paying homage to that whole era of early-00’s street rap. The production comes from C-Lance and NotForgotten, who sent Zilla the beat due to its similarities to the sort of banger you would have heard at legendary NY club, The Tunnel, back in the day. You can stream the track below and downloads are available via Bandcamp. Continue reading “Premiere – Zilla Rocca: 2000 Pelle Pelle Flow”
Philly duo Zilla Rocca & Small Pro – aka Career Crooks – return with a new musical selection, following on from their 2017 debut, Good Luck With That. Strong lyricism, production and criminality still reign supreme on what is ostensibly a remix album, but with some fresh material also thrown in. There are remixes from the duo themselves, as well as some other gems from Fresh Kils, DJ Manipulator, and Rolled Gold Beats to name a few. The album is out now on URBNET and you can stream it in full below. Continue reading “Career Crooks: Thieving As Long As I’m Breathing (Stream)”
