Robert ft. Rag ‘N’ Bone Man: Porridge

A new video for one of last year’s best from the UK, as Robert brings his collaboration with Rag ‘N’ Bone Man to life. Porridge is an emotionally charged and honest account of life behind the bars and its aftermath, detailing the effect it has both on the life of the person incarcerated, as well as the lives of those around them. It’s a powerful track, with added soul from both Rags’ vocals and the production, which comes from Sonnyjim and The Purist. It’s lifted from Robert’s debut album, Orange Is The New Black, which is out now.

Sonnyjim & The Purist ft. MF DOOM & Jay Electronica: Barz Simpson

A fitting video for one of the more understandably anticipated tracks from Sonnyjim’s recent album with The Purist. Barz Simpson not only features a guest appearance from Jay Electronica, but also a verse from the much mourned legend, MF DOOM. You hear a lot of rappers labelling their upcoming videos as movies, but that’s exactly the energy that we’re dealing with here. ABOVEGROUND is a master of this approach and as usual he manages to pack a lot of visual punches into just under 4 minutes of film. No spoilers, see for yourself above. Robert: Porridge (Stream)

A strong introduction here from Robert, with the arrival of his debut release, Porridge. The title track offers up an honest insight into prison life and the emotions that come with it, while Rag’N’Bone Man’s vocal support lends the track an even more impassioned edge. The remix is fortified even further thanks to features from Dirty Dike and Skinnyman. Then on the B-side we have Kelly Had a Seizure, which brings in the otherworldly presence of Kool Keith. Both tracks are produced by Sonnyjim and The Purist. Not bad for a debut. The blurb mentions an album too, Orange is the New Black, so I’m intrigued to hear what that has in store. Your Old Droog: Transportation (Stream)

The second Your Old Droog project in as many months emerged last week, as the New York MC and producer released Transportation. He was already being touted as a contender for your album of the year lists with It Wasn’t Even Close and by all accounts Transportation seems to be getting similar responses.

CASISDEAD: Drive You Home

New track from CASISDEAD positively dripping in 80’s synth glory, as he enlists The Purist to handle the production on Drive You Home. The video only adds to the nostalgia with its retro arcade game aesthetic. More of this please.

SonnyJim: Mud in My Malbec (Album Snippets)

Our only legit baller rapper has been relatively quiet over the past couple of years, in contrast to the prolific years that saw him and the whole EatGood roster knock out solid release after solid release. This hiatus is now officially over though, as the announcement that SonnyJim’s long awaited Mud in my Malbec LP will finally be released at the end of this month.

The Purist & Westside Gunn ft. Roc Marciano: Perfect Plex

Great video here for a track lifted from the recent collaboration between Westside Gunn and The Purist. A homage to the old WWF days and in particular Mr Perfect. Twizzy: Keep The Faith

There aren’t many MCs I know who sound as hungry on a track as Twizzy does and no one I know who seems to have that hunger in him 24/7. Over the last few years I have watched him hone his skills and use his emotions to keep striving to better himself as a rapper. Farma G shared this track a couple of days ago, which he says has been sitting on his hard drive for a long time. Produced by The Purist and titled with his and Chester P’s respective birthdays, this track is a moving account of his upbringing and subsequent years, dealing with things like his relationship with his parents and the birth of his first son, Aaron aka Remus.
