The second single from the forthcoming Iron Wigs album is out and it’s another banger. If you’re not aware, the newly formed crew is comprised of Sonnyjim, Vic Spencer and Verbal Kent, with Sonny on full production duties. That production is sounding on point on this latest joint, which also features a typically tight verse from Roc Marci. The full album is due for release on 27 June on Mello Music. As I’ve mentioned before, Mello Music are announcing a seemingly endless stream of new music at the moment, and the roster continues to grow thanks to the arrival of IRON WIGS. The three man crew is comprised of Sonnyjim, Vic Spencer and Verbal Kent, with Sonny handling full production duties on their forthcoming album. The first taste of that album was released this week, in the form of the CRIMEAPPLE assisted, Problematic. The brilliantly titled, Your Birthday is Cancelled, is due for release on 27 June. A fresh release to bless the start of your week, as Sonnyjim hits us with another new album, this time teaming up with UK boom bap aficionado, Illinformed. The Chemistry Must Be Respected sees its full release today and is comprised of the sort of luxurious monotone raps, which we’ve been accustomed to from the Brum native over the last few years, as well as that soul-laced nod-inducing production that Illinformed has down to a fine art, but with a definite Sonny flair as he joins on the assist. There is support too, with Sony hooking up a smooth verse from Hus Kingpin on Diamonds & Carrots, while Leaf Dog steps up to the plate on Golden Gates, and Jehst does a masterful turn on Zircon. The full thing can be heard below, with downloads available via Bandcamp. Continue reading “Sonnyjim x Illinformed: The Chemistry Must Be Respected (Stream)”
Nottingham maintains its rep as a hotbed of rap talent, thanks to this new project from Vandal Savage and Claude Money. The VVV MC seems to have found an ideal match in the rising Nottingham beat-maker, as he weaves his way through an array of woozy jazz samples and solid drum loops, ably assisted by Juga-Naut and Sonnyjim along the way. You can hear the full album above and it’s also available on Spotify.
A fresh collab from Giallo Point, as he joins forces with yet another UK legend for his latest project. The Magnum Opus is the brainchild of Giallo and Micall Parknsun, with the duo finding a seemingly perfect synergy in their MC-producer partnership. The features only add to the album’s weight, as we find the likes of Jehst, Smoovth, Da Flyy Hooligan and Sonnyjim all adding their piece to the proceedings. You can stream a couple of tracks below, with downloads available over on Bandcamp. The artwork for the album was created by Emily Catherine.
Let’s stick with UK legends for a second, as we turn to the latest release from one time Universal Soldier, Ric Branson (FKA Ricochet). This EP is the follow up to Consortium Dreams Pt. 1, which was only released at the start of this month. The second instalment features production from a number of notable names, including Sonnyjim, Karnate and Branson’s original producer of choice, A.H.Fly. Plus there are cuts from Evil Ed and Juice, who also contributes some production for the EP. You can listen to the full thing below and you can find downloads for all Branson’s recent releases on Bandcamp.
Another incredible album is released into the world today, as Juga-Naut and Giallo Point drop the rightly anticipated, Back To The Grill Again. Both artists have steadily climbed the ranks of recognition over the past few years and are now viewed by many as two of best in the UK. The argument for that recognition is very strong on this new album, with Jugz’s lyrical prowess seemingly more attuned than ever and Giallo providing the perfect accompaniment for him with each beat. It’s definitely one to satisfy the older generation, as you can guess from the opening lines of the blurb – “This album is best listened to on MiniDisc in Nottingham, wearing Air Max Uptempo’s while going to watch Space Jam the day it dropped at the Odeon 1997” – but I can see it easily enticing fresher faced fans too, thanks to the production values and the often luxurious lyrical content. Fine list of features too, with Milano Constantine, Scorzayzee, SmooVth, Napoleon Da Legend, Vandal Savage, and SonnyJim all on the assist. There are various physical and merch deals available over on Bandcamp and you can hear the album in full below. Continue reading “Juga-Naut & Giallo Point: Back To The Grill Again (Stream)”
Two for one on the latest video from Vic Spencer and Sonnyjim. Record Row and General Consensus are both taken from the duo’s sophomore colaboration, Spencer or Higher 2, which was released at the start of the year.
As reported the other day, Zilla Rocca returned to the fore last week with a new project and I am pleased to report that it is a worthy addition to his already exceedingly robust repertoire. He is a true student of the culture and 96 Mentality embodies everything that comes with that title. Continue reading “Zilla Rocca: 96 Mentality (Stream)”
A very welcome return to the booth from Booda French, as he releases his new single featuring some typically luxurious production from EatGood head honcho, SonnyJim. You can stream Vintage Berbatov below.
