Earlier this year we were treated to the release of a new album from Duck Down veterans, Smiff-N-Wessun, as they teamed up with 9th Wonder and The Soul Council for The All. Ocean Drive is the latest single to be taken from the album, with Khrysis handling production duties and a great feature from Philly legend, Musiq Soulchild. The All is available to buy now over at the Duck Down store.
Smif-N-Wessun today released their brand new album, featuring exclusive production from 9th Wonder and The Soul Council. Following on from a slick performance for the NPR Tiny Desk series, the Duck Down duo seem to have found a new lease of life as this is their first full-length release since their 2011 project with Pete Rock. You can hear one of the lead singles above, which features Rapsody and Musiq SoulChild, plus the full album is available to stream below. Continue reading “Smif-N-Wessun ft. A few months ago, it was announced that J. Period would be recording a live mixtape, featuring arguably three of the greatest MCs to ever pick up a mic – Rakim, Black Thought and Pharoahe Monch. The recording took place in New York, at Sony Hall and as well as the three main players, there were also appearances from the likes of Dres and Smif-N-Wessun. No surprise that the end result is a total barsfest, with everyone bringing their A-game to the mix. No mean feat considering it was all performed and recorded live in one take. The tape is basically split into three sections, with each MC performing some of their most loved material. Go lose yourself in the full project, which is available to stream below. Strong lead single from the long-awaited collaborative album from Masta Ace and Marco Polo, which is due for release next month. The duo are joined by fellow NY vets, Smif-N-Wessun, as they pay homage to the famed borough. Breukelen is scheduled for release on Fat Beats on 9 November.
Yesterday marked the third anniversary of the untimely passing of the much loved, Sean Price. In honour of the great man, Duck Down released a new video for one of the tracks from his acclaimed 2017 album, Imperius Rex. Apartheid features fellow label mates, Buckshot and Steele, with production from Crummie Beats. Imperius Rex is out now on Duck Down Music.
Interview originally took place in June 2011

Okay and what, for you, made that the most important year?
Well everything that was being made was so original and never heard before, but you know, with that being said, that’s what hip hop is supposed to be all about: originality and just things that people have not heard other people doing. And then with the radio and the way radio plays music for political reasons, not necessarily caring for the community. You know sometimes they do, you got younger fans who listen to today’s music, but my thing is to play everything; anything and everything that’s good and I kinda felt like the hip hop we were doing was so original, but it is just lacking that sound today.
