This week we finally got to explore the much anticipated collaboration from Skyzoo and Pete Rock, as they released their Retropolitan LP. The two NY representatives have crafted an album that is at once an ode to the city they love and a cautionary tale about the gentrification that is so prevalent throughout the Five Boroughs. Skyzoo and Pete Rock treat us to the second single from their forthcoming abum, featuring an altogether ridiculous list of guests. The NY duo are joined by four lyrical heavyweights on Eastern Conference All Stars, as Griselda’s Westside Gunn, Conway and Benny The Butcher all hitting the booth, with Detroit favourite, Elzhi completing the line-up. It’s as powerful as you can imagine and you can hear for yourself below. The album, Retropolitan, is due for release on Mello Music Group on 20 September.

Strong start to the forthcoming album from Skyzoo and Pete Rock. Ever since the veteran producer announced he was teaming up with the Brooklyn lyricist, I’ve been patiently waiting to hear what they have been cooking up and this first taste does not disappoint. The beat is apparently an unearthed gem from Rock’s undoubtedly vast back catalogue, which he first made 25 years ago, around the same time he was working on tracks like The World Is Yours for Nas. It’s remained untouched since then, but still sounds like the perfect foundation for Skyzoo to work his magic. Skyzoo recently released a staggeringly good album, which doesn’t seem to have received the fanfare it deserves thus far. The Brooklyn MC has always been a reliable source for good, straight up hip hop and In Celebration of US carries on the trend, but with even more high grade lyricism packed into its 15 tracks. Baker’s Dozen is a prime example, with Skyzoo’s wordplay nicely complimented by Raheem Devaughn’s D’Angelo-esque vocal style. In Celebration of Us is out now on First Generation Rich.

Apollo Brown and Skyzoo released a great album last year, one of many highlights from the Mello Music Group family. Nodding Off was one of my favourites from the project and fittingly brought it to a close. The Easy Truth LP is available to buy now over on Bandcamp.

Fresh video from the excellent collab LP that Apollo and Skyzoo put out earlier in the year. This particular track features Ohio MC, Stalley.

Just saw this track doing the rounds online and had to share. Apollo Brown and Skyzoo have an album coming out at the end of this month and the leaks I’ve heard so far are sounding really good. This latest one is no different as the duo enrol two more hot tickets in the form of Westside Gunn and Conway. The album The Easy Truth is out on Mello Music Group on 30 September with iTunes pre-orders available here.
