Following on from the much deserved anticipation surrounding its arrival, the new album from Guilty Simpson and Gensu Dean saw its full release last week. Guilty has been one of the most reliable artists in rap for a long time, thanks to a consistency that almost guarantees satisfaction with every project he blesses, and in Gensu he has found a creative partnership that reaches the same heights as his earlier works with Black Milk and Madlib. The guest stars help too, with Black Milk, Marv Won, Skyzoo, Georgia Anne Muldrow and Yarbrough bringing even more potency to an album that was already brimming over with appeal. You can hear a preview of EGO below, then head over to Mello Music for your vinyl and CD needs.Continue reading “Guilty Simpson & Gensu Dean: EGO (Stream)”
One last track squeezed out from Guilty Simpson and Gensu Dean, before the album drops this Friday. The latest offering sees the duo levelling up on the lyrical side of the proceedings, thanks to an unsurprisingly tight verse from Skyzoo. The album, EGO, is out on 8 October via Mello Music Group.Continue reading “Guilty Simpson & Gensu Dean ft. Skyzoo: Hating”
Two for one on the latest video from Skyzoo, continuing the run of gems to be lifted from his recent album. All The Brilliant Things is out now on Mello Music Group.
Today sees the release of Skyzoo’s latest album, All The Brilliant Things, which focuses on the gentrification and appropriation that have besieged his beloved New York borough and beyond. If you caught the singles that were released in the run-up, you will have some sense of the direction the production is taking – jazz-soaked beats with heavy dashes of soul – and if you’re familiar with Skyzoo’s reputation, then you will already know that virtually every line is a thing of beauty in its own right. Some strong features too, with the likes of Raheem DeVaughn, BJ The Chicago Kid, Monica Blaire and Hypnotic Brass Ensemble bringing their own strains to the mix. You can explore the album below, then cop a physical or download via Mello Music Group.Continue reading “Skyzoo: All The Brilliant Things (Stream)”
Skyzoo continues to set the scene for his forthcoming album, with the release of the next single. St. James Liquors delves further into the album’s themes about gentrification and appropriation, by painting a picture of the neighbourhood that Skyzoo remembers from the old days and in particular, the artists and musicians who populated it. The track is accompanied by some jazz soaked production from Kenny Keys, along with horn bursts from Sean Taylor and a hook from rising Detroit vocalist, Aaria. You can check out the track below, with the full album, All the Brilliant Things, following on 11 June via Mello Music Group.Continue reading “Skyzoo ft. Aaria: St. James Liquors”
Skyzoo is preparing to release his new album and today saw the unveiling of the first single. When Mello Music first announced that the NY rapper had a new project on the way, I was particularly happy to see Hypnotic Brass Ensemble listed in the credits, and so I was even happier when they ran with their feature as the lead single. They provide their usual jazzy accompaniment on Bed-Stuy is Burning, Skyzoo’s ode to the rapidly changing Brooklyn neighbourhood. The track is produced by Rashid Hadee. The full album, All The Brilliant Things, is due for release on 11 June.
Some lovely music here as Skyzoo unveils his new Milestones EP. The seven song collection is a conceptual EP, centred around the idea that fathers don’t get shown enough love within hip hop. Each song follows on from the other, as Skyzoo breaks down how his father has been responsible for making him into the man – and father – he is today. A lot of nourishing production, heavy on the jazz, with Skyzoo’s pen as sharp as ever, bringing a certain beauty to the art of rapping your ass off. You can stream Milestones in full below. This week we finally got to explore the much anticipated collaboration from Skyzoo and Pete Rock, as they released their Retropolitan LP. The two NY representatives have crafted an album that is at once an ode to the city they love and a cautionary tale about the gentrification that is so prevalent throughout the Five Boroughs. Skyzoo and Pete Rock treat us to the second single from their forthcoming abum, featuring an altogether ridiculous list of guests. The NY duo are joined by four lyrical heavyweights on Eastern Conference All Stars, as Griselda’s Westside Gunn, Conway and Benny The Butcher all hitting the booth, with Detroit favourite, Elzhi completing the line-up. It’s as powerful as you can imagine and you can hear for yourself below. The album, Retropolitan, is due for release on Mello Music Group on 20 September.
Strong start to the forthcoming album from Skyzoo and Pete Rock. Ever since the veteran producer announced he was teaming up with the Brooklyn lyricist, I’ve been patiently waiting to hear what they have been cooking up and this first taste does not disappoint. The beat is apparently an unearthed gem from Rock’s undoubtedly vast back catalogue, which he first made 25 years ago, around the same time he was working on tracks like The World Is Yours for Nas. It’s remained untouched since then, but still sounds like the perfect foundation for Skyzoo to work his magic. You can hear the track below and stay tuned for the album, Retropolitan, which is coming out on 20 September on Mello Music Group. Continue reading “Skyzoo & Pete Rock: It’s All Good”
