Another strong track from Talos and his recent Lowlight EP. Slow Traffic features London-based singer/songwriter Jerome Thomas. The Lowlight EP is available now via High Focus.
It was back in 2016 when Anderson Paak provided everyone’s summer soundtrack (thanks to his January release of Malibu) and then finished off the same year with his Yes Lawd album, alongside KNXWLEDGE. Since then he has been relatively quiet as far as new music goes, so was happy to see a new track surface yesterday.
Bubblin is produced by Jahlil Beats and AntMan Wonder, and is a step away from the more soulful sounds of his previous works, but if this is the new direction he has chosen to move in, I am definitely going to be following. The track is accompanied by a mad video too, in which Paak discovers a never-ending supply of money from an ATM and proceeds to reach ridiculous baller levels. There is also a cameo from his son, Soul.
Paak recently spoke with Zane Lowe and hinted at the arrival of more new music soon, saying, “I have 65,000 songs in the vault. No features, fam”. Stay tuned.
Something a little bit different from the Rhymesayers camp this time, as they recently released the new video from vocalist, Nikki Jean. Nikki first came to my attention as part of Philadelphia-based band, Nouveau Riche, alongside Roots affiliate, Dice Raw.
Since then she has returned as a solo artist and People & Planes is her first song on RSE, since signing to the label at the end of last year – hopefully meaning a full-length is going to follow soon. Her vocals are always smooth, but with a haunting edge to them, which is used to great effect on this track, as Nikki literally falls apart while viewing images of war, murder and other atrocities on-screen. The track is produced by Nikki, Michael “Double-0” Aguilar and Sean Kantrowitz. It’s available to stream & buy from all the usual spots.
Ness Nite follows up her spellbinding song, Expectations, with an infectious little rhythm called Tightrope. While its predecessor was a more wavy affair, Tightrope picks up the tempo a little bit, thanks to Mike Frey’s production. The song premiered over on Vinyl Me Please, where Ness explained that it “is about doing what you need to do to stay up. When I wrote it, it was about a specific situation, but it has evolved with me. ” This is the next track to be taken from her upcoming debut LP, Dream Girl, which is due out on POW Recordings next year. Visually arresting scenes in the latest video from Foreign Beggars. Bosh is the second track to be taken from their long awaited, upcoming album and features a nice hook from Marcello Spooks, as well as co-production from Bangzy. The video was made by Xiphi Films.
The long awaited third release from one of MCR’s underground queens, IAMDDB, touched ground this morning. Hoodrich follows on from WAEVEYBBY and Vibe, which emerged over the past couple of years and along with a number of features with the likes of INKA and Lenzman, have propelled her into the spotlight.
And rightly so. IAMDDB is a pretty unique talent and still independent enough to be a problem for the current industry vanguards. She is definitely going to blow at some point, now it’s just a question of when. Continue reading “IAMDDB: Hoodrich Vol. 3”
Children of Zeus – aka Tyler Daley and Konny Kon – have spent the last couple of years releasing a smooth blend of rap and soul. In the process they have scored a whole new batch of fans, plenty of critical acclaim and some crazy live shows – including a set in the infamous Boiler Room. I got the chance to speak with both Tyler and Konny about why they started making music together, their influences and the possibility of hearing a full album from them. Been waiting a while to hear this gem – the debut EP from Bristol-based singer, Ngaio. Sublime neosoul vibes from an artist who is possibly best known for her work as part of Eva Lazarus’ Afronaughts. She has enlisted Baileys Brown for the production and he has brought four nice beats for her to work her magic on. The result is a quartet of laid back, but powerful songs, which make for a strong debut record. The EP is out now on KonichiWahGwarn Records and you can download it here, or stream it below. Children of Zeus have been added to this year’s Soundwave line-up in Croatia and to celebrate that fact, they have put together a mix which is pretty much guaranteed to kill any trace of your winter blues. The 50 minute mix features a nice selection of cuts from the likes of Anderson .Paak, BJ the Chicago Kid and Joyce Wrice, as well as Konny & Tyler themselves. You can stream it below and I’ve included the tracklist for easy reference. Enjoy. Continue reading “Children of Zeus: Sunsets & Soulfood Mix”
