Good news is scarce this morning, but luckily I do have something to brighten these post-election blues. At midnight, Minnesota hip hop pioneers, Atmosphere, decided to release a surprise new album, following on from the release of last year’s, Mi Vida Local. Kicking off with their recent single, Bde Maka Ska, the album then weaves its way through 11 more finely crafted tracks, with Slug and Ant as reliably on point as ever before. Atmosphere have released so many solid albums over the years, that at this point the only surprise is going to be if they hit us with a dud. Luckily, Whenever falls into their usual category of reliable rap. Features come from a mix of new and more familiar names, including fellow RSE artist, Nikki Jean, Dynospectrum veteran, Musab, and rising Minnesota rap star, Haphduzn. The album is available to stream in full below and there is also a video for the Jean assisted track, Lovely. Other streaming options are also available.

Happy to see the arrival of Nikki Jean’s debut release on Rhymesayers. Having first come to my attention as the lead singer of Nouveau Riche, alongside The Roots affiliate, Dice Raw, Nikki’s voice was always especially captivating. Having teased us with a couple of singles over the last year or so, including the atmospheric, People & Planes, the Philadelphia-based vocalist proves her worth with this seven track, hip hop infused EP. There is a lone feature from regular collaborator, Lupe Fiasco, who drops in on the previously released single, Mr Clean, with the rest of the project allowing Nikki’s lyricism to simply shine through. Downloads of Beautiful Prison are available over on Bandcamp and the full EP can be heard below. Read the rest of this entry »

Something a little bit different from the Rhymesayers camp this time, as they recently released the new video from vocalist, Nikki Jean. Nikki first came to my attention as part of Philadelphia-based band, Nouveau Riche, alongside Roots affiliate, Dice Raw.
Since then she has returned as a solo artist and People & Planes is her first song on RSE, since signing to the label at the end of last year – hopefully meaning a full-length is going to follow soon. Her vocals are always smooth, but with a haunting edge to them, which is used to great effect on this track, as Nikki literally falls apart while viewing images of war, murder and other atrocities on-screen. The track is produced by Nikki, Michael “Double-0” Aguilar and Sean Kantrowitz. It’s available to stream & buy from all the usual spots.
