AKAI SOLO: Demonslayer + LP Stream

Backwoodz Studioz promised us a bountiful year at the start of 2022 and that’s exactly what they have delivered, culminating (possibly?) with the release of AKAI SOLO’s debut album on the label. SOLO has been steadily building a reputation as one of the foremost artists of the era, thanks to a string of solo records and collaborations that have emerged over the last few years.
His latest, Spirit Roaming, is the direct evolution of that ascent as he officially joins the ranks of a label that perfectly matches his own trajectory. There are many familiar names among the production credits, with August Fanon, Roper Williams, Theravada and Messiah Musik among the sonic craftsmen who have all lent their skills to the record, helping to create what is arguably the Brooklyn MC’s strongest work to date.
The first video from the album was released in conjunction with the main drop and features production from regular collaborator, iblss, who has been behind a few of my favourite beats over the span of SOLO’s career. You can check the video out above, with a preview of the full album available below. Check out Bandcamp to fulfil your digital and physical wish list.

billy woods x Messiah Musik: Pollo Rico + Church (Stream)

This week we were treated to billy woods’ second full-length project of the year, with the surprise release of Church. The album continues to pave the way for a stunning year for Backwoodz Studioz, which has included acclaimed bodies of work from both woods (Aethiopes) and ELUCID (I Told Bessie).
Church sees woods reuniting with Messiah Musik, who is at the helm for the album’s entirety, once again proving himself one of the most consistently intriguing producers of the era. Pollo Rico is the lead single from the album, and it arrives with a brand new video from frequent collaborator, Joseph Mault. You can watch the video above and then check the link below to explore the further wonders of Church. Downloads are available via Bandcamp.

Sleep Sinatra: In God’s Image (Stream)

In God’s Image is the latest album from Sleep Sinatra, which emerged at the tail end of last year. If you’ve checked my previous posts surrounding Sleep, then you will already know the man is a proficient MC and this is more than evident on this latest escapade. Strong features and production picks help to keep the energy levels raised, thanks to contributions from the likes of J Scienide, DØØf, Stu Bangas, BrainOrchestra, Big Flowers and Messiah Musik. You can explore the full release below and then head over to Bandcamp to grab yourself a download.

Defcee & Messiah Musik: Trapdoor (Stream)

Already way up in the upper echelons of 2021, Backwoodz Studioz continue their gold run with a couple more solid releases before the year is done. Defcee made his debut on the label, alongside the mighty Messiah Musik, as they joined forces to bring the world, Trapdoor. Showcasing both Defcee’s unfuckwitable writing levels and Messiah Musik’s equally indefatigable production output, Trapdoor burst into our lives and secured an AOTY placement in the process. The album is laden with top notch guests too, including features from PremRock, Alaska, Armand Hammer, Curly Castro and Henry Canyons. The album is out now and is very worthy of your concentration. You can test the waters below if you need any further convincing.

Bloodmoney Perez: Remember This Shit! + LP Stream

About Fucking Time is the latest release from Bloodmoney Perez, where we find the Seattle-based artist once again joining forces with rising Baltimore producer, Messiah Muzik. The pair make for a good creative pairing, having already collaborated to great effect on Perez’s 2018 album, Time is a Motherfucker, and fans of that album will be pleased to know that this latest project continues in the same vein. The album also features a Defame remix of last year’s Slap Yourself and a lone feature from psych-rap aficionado, cunabear. Perez has also released a video for Remember This Shit!, which you can find below, along with a stream of the album. Downloads are available over on Bandcamp. Bloodmoney Perez: Time Is A Motherfucker (Stream)

Another project that I slept on, but thankfully caught up with this week, is the latest from Bloodmoney Perez. The Portland artist came up on the same scene as cats like Blu & Exile, and has been making hip hop since his formative years as a teenager. Time Is A Motherfucker is the result of three years of hard work and focus, but the result is well worth the grind as Perez channels the influences of names like Philip K Dick and Pedro Albizu Campos, alongside a number of talented rap luminaries on the assist. Curly Castro, Sleep Sinatra and MCF all bring their respective voices to the proceedings, as well as Messiah Musik, who injects his production skills into the majority of the tracks. Perez handles the beats on the remainder, proving his worth both in the booth and behind the boards. You can stream the album in full below, with downloads and physicals available over on Bandcamp. Curly Castro: TOSH (Stream)

It was already a phenomenal year for hip hop, but the last month is seeing a flurry of releases that are pushing the standards even higher. One of them is Curly Castro’s solo effort, TOSH. The album is apparently inspired by George Orwell, Spike Lee and MF Doom, as well as Castro’s own background – West Indies, Philly and Brooklyn – resulting in a richly diverse sound throughout. That diversity is also thanks in part to the range of producers who are involved. There are beats from the likes of Blockhead, Blueprint, Zilla Rocca, Messiah Musik and NASA, as well as features from billy woods, PremRock and ELUCID, among others. When you put all those attributes together with Castro’s own inimitable talents, you get a worthy contender for your end of years lists. The album is available to stream below and you can grab a download over on Bandcamp. Continue reading “Curly Castro: TOSH (Stream)”

Zilla Rocca: Future Former Rapper (Stream)

Good to see the long-awaited solo album from Zilla Rocca has finally been given life. Future Former Rapper is the culmination of a career which spans 13 years, all of them as a totally independent artist – which is no mean feat given how many fellow independents have been swallowed up or broken beyond repair during that same period.
The album is the perfect showcase for the talents that have kept Zilla afloat through those years and finds him accompanied by some of the artists that he has been associated with during that same time frame.
Guest spots are held by the likes of Armand Hammer, Serengeti and fellow Wrecking Crew representative, Curly Castro, as well as a bunch of high-end production credits from Steel Tipped Dove, Messiah Musik, Disco Vietnam and Small Pro. Future Former Rapper is ready to stream below, with downloads available via Bandcamp. Continue reading “Zilla Rocca: Future Former Rapper (Stream)”

Armand Hammer: Paraffin (Stream)

At long last the latest album from Armand Hammer is now available for your streaming pleasure. Originally released by Backwoodz Studioz on a limited vinyl only run, last week saw its arrival in digital form. The pairing of billy woods and ELUCID is always a cause for celebration, with Paraffin continuing in the same vein as its predecessors, delivering an album brimming over with lyricism that will leave you still finding gems on your umpteenth listen. The production boasts some great names, with Messiah Musik, Ohbliv, August Fanon, Willie Green, Kenny Segal and ELUCID himself all providing suitable backdrops for the tracks to unfold on. There is also a lone, yet particularly strong feature from Sketch185. Paraffin is available to stream below, with downloads available via Bandcamp. Continue reading “Armand Hammer: Paraffin (Stream)”
