You might have noticed me singing Cambatta’s praises over the last few weeks, since Mello Music announced the imminent arrival of his debut for the label. The singles that had emerged in the run-up had given us a decent taste of Cambatta’s acid-tinged world, falling into a subcategory of psychedelic rap that has been burgeoning this year especially (Check out Psypiritual & The Lasso and The Leonard Simpson Duo for further listening). Today sees the release of Cambatta’s album in full, along with a new video for the title track. I have a proper review coming in next month’s edition of The Wire, but rest assured that the album lives up to its expectations, as demonstrated in the superb animated video above. The track is produced by O.P. Supa. The rest of the album can be heard below, with streams and downloads available from the usual spots. Continue reading “Cambatta: LSD + LP Stream”
Very happy to see the return of Marlowe – aka L’Orange and Solemn Brigham – as they bless us with the first single from their upcoming album. Their titular debut was one of 2018’s highlights and was widely acclaimed by fans and critics alike, so the anticipation for a follow-up has been mounting ever since. Future Power Sources is our first fresh material from the duo since then and I think it will act as the perfect dose for those fiendin’ for more of that potent social commentary and heavy, sample-driven production. The album, Marlowe 2, is due for release on 7 August via Mello Music Group.
The second single from the forthcoming Iron Wigs album is out and it’s another banger. If you’re not aware, the newly formed crew is comprised of Sonnyjim, Vic Spencer and Verbal Kent, with Sonny on full production duties. That production is sounding on point on this latest joint, which also features a typically tight verse from Roc Marci. The full album is due for release on 27 June on Mello Music. Some lovely music here as Skyzoo unveils his new Milestones EP. The seven song collection is a conceptual EP, centred around the idea that fathers don’t get shown enough love within hip hop. Each song follows on from the other, as Skyzoo breaks down how his father has been responsible for making him into the man – and father – he is today. A lot of nourishing production, heavy on the jazz, with Skyzoo’s pen as sharp as ever, bringing a certain beauty to the art of rapping your ass off. You can stream Milestones in full below. As I’ve mentioned before, Mello Music are announcing a seemingly endless stream of new music at the moment, and the roster continues to grow thanks to the arrival of IRON WIGS. The three man crew is comprised of Sonnyjim, Vic Spencer and Verbal Kent, with Sonny handling full production duties on their forthcoming album. The first taste of that album was released this week, in the form of the CRIMEAPPLE assisted, Problematic. The brilliantly titled, Your Birthday is Cancelled, is due for release on 27 June. More new music from Cambatta, as he continues to prove he is a valuable voice amidst this burgeoning global shit show. On Bones of Osiris, we are exposed to some of the rapper’s insights on the current backlash against the police, with his bars building on their urgency, thanks in part to Cambatta’s ever-imposing vocals which loom up out of the shadows as the song progresses. Production this time round is handled by Chup. This is the second single from the forthcoming album, LunarSolarDuality, which drops on 21 July via Mello.
Another album worth some of your attention today, is the new collaboration between Joell Ortiz and KXNG Crooked. Having kicked off their careers at relatively the same time, when they both won XXL’s Freshmen of the Year Award in 2008, these are two accomplished rappers who between them have been signed to Death Row, Aftermath and Shady Records. Basically their reputation proceeds them and so it was really only a matter of how good this album was going to be, as opposed to whether it would flop. There are definitely no flops on the production side, thanks to contributions from the likes of The Heatmakerz, Erick Sermon, Apollo Brown and Illmind; not really any surprises in there, but the selection definitely fits the bill. Only two features, from fellow Mello resident, Blakk Soul, who brings his soaring vocals to an emotionally charged hook on Lose My Mind, and vocalist, MRK SX, who you might remember from the first single. You can hear the album for yourself below and downloads are available via Bandcamp. Continue reading “Joell Ortiz & KXNG Crooked: H.A.R.D. (Stream)”
Another gritty dose of acid-soaked rap from Cambatta, as he drops his latest video. nXggXr ChrXst is taken from the MC’s forthcoming album on Mello Music Group and features some brooding production from VDon. The album, Lunar Solar Duality, is due for release on 21 July and pre-orders are available. What with the acid-rock infused LSD album from Guilty Simpson and Leonard Charles earlier in the year, the hallucinogenic tapestry of Psypiritual and The Lasso’s recent album, and the unveiling of this new Cambatta project, it seems like mind-altering influences are the new wave and I for one am okay with that.
It’s getting to the stage now where Mello Music Group are announcing and releasing albums faster than I can keep up with. And they all sound promising too. Take one of the forthcoming projects they have lined up, featuring a collaboration between Detroit legend, Apollo Brown, and Buffalo queen, Che’ Noir, which kicked off with a Black Thought assisted lead single. The album is further boosted by features from Skyzoo, Planet Asia, Ty Farris and Blakk Soul, who all seem like good partners for Che’s unflinching lyricism. You can hear Hustle Don’t Give for yourself below and pre-orders for the album are also available. The release date is set for 10 July. Continue reading “Apollo Brown & Che’ Noir ft. Black Thought: Hustle Don’t Give”
More new music from Mello, as Joell Ortiz announces his forthcoming project, which sees him joining forces with KXNG Crooked. The album will feature production from a host of strong names, including Apollo Brown, Illmind and Erick Sermon. Below you can hear the lead single and title track, and you can find pre-orders here. The release is planned for 29 May.
