Another great project from Manchester favourite, Skittles, as he treats us to his latest album, Poor on Purpose. Thanks to his work in MCR over the years, including some stunning material as part of LEVELZ, Skittles has built up a sturdy and much-deserved following as well as props from his peers across the country. Poor on Purpose serves as am ideal snapshot of how he reached that level including his versatility on the mic, with his intricate flows effortlessly lacing a wide range of beats – including a very Manny-centric story in the form of Zeeko II. Skittles has some assistance on a few tracks, thanks to appearances from DRS, Fox, Truthos, Frisko and Think Tonk. Poor on Purpose is available to stream in full below and you can find physicals/downloads over on Bandcamp, complete with a very special vinyl presentation. Read the rest of this entry »

Skittles returns with a new self-produced solo track, Init. Co-produced by Bricky T Mortar, the track is released on Skittles’ own label, Propatop. The video was made by Ellis Meade.

Great track from Manchester crew, Voodoo Black, as they kick off the year with Gettin Dum. Dubbul O, Ellis Meade and Sparkz take the tempo up to 140, demonstrating their shared dexterity in the booth, with Cutterz production hitting the right notes as standard. Lots more to come from Voodoo Black this year, so keep those eyes peeled.

I took a break over the festive/festering season so I’ve got a hell of a lot to catch up on. Let’s start with the latest release from one of Manchester’s more boisterous collectives, LEVELZ, as they return with Rainy Day (LVL 50). The track features vocal work from Chimpo, Fox, Skittles and Sparkz, plus production from Metrodome and Bricks. Rainy Day is available to download now via Bandcamp.

The Manchester collective return with their latest single, accompanied by a great illustrated and animated video. The MCs on board this time round are comprised of Chunky, Fox, Skittles, Truthos, Sparkz, T-Man and Chimpo, with production being handled by Metrodome, Chunky, Bricks and Skittles. There are also downloads available via Bandcamp. The animation comes courtesy of Stemfour Visual.

Honoured to be able to bring you the world premiere of the latest video from Children of Zeus. Still riding high on the wave of the release of their triumphant debut album, Travel Light, the Manchester duo now return with some new visuals for one of the album’s many high points, Fear of a Flat Planet. The track also features the distinctive talent of fellow Manny family member, LayFullStop, along with another striking video from Tarnish Vision. Travel Light is out now on First Word Records.

An ensemble of talent in the latest video from Roots Raddix. The Manchester collective have cooked up a treat on Raise Up, with LayFullStop, Woddy Green and Zz, The Slept On all delivering solid verses. The track is produced by Clayton and was made as part of the crew’s five day residency at Red Bull Studios in London. The video was made by Nessaro Films. Raise Up is available to download now via iTunes.

It’s Friday, the sun is shining, Trump is getting the British welcome he deserves and we can finally indulge ourselves in the debut album from Children of Zeus. It has been a very long time coming and any regular visitors to my blog will know the work that the Manchester duo have put in over the years to get to this point. Weighing in at 13 tracks, Travel Light is everything I was anticipating. The MCR family vibe is as strong as ever, with guest spots from LayFullStop, [KSR], Metrodome and DRS, plus further production credits from Juga-Naut, Sebb Bash and Beat Butcha. Their trademark hip hop-soul sound is the most prevalent on the album, but there are elements of reggae and jazz at work too, making Travel Light a highly ambitious album, but one that works incredibly well. You can stream it in full below, with downloads and physicals available via Bandcamp. Read the rest of this entry »

Manchester queen IAMDDB continues her gold run with a new joint, Drippy. Heralded as the lead single from an upcoming EP, Flightmode Vol. 4, the track is produced by Burgaboy, who taps into that trap-soul vibe that IAMDDB has been embracing since her Hoodrich project was released last year. More news on the EP soon.

One of my favourite rising stars from the Manchester scene has returned with a new video, as we patiently await her mixtape drop. LayFullStop is on fine form on Supernatural, with her melodic lilt connecting perfectly with the HEMAI production. The Colour Reaction mixtape is due out soon.
