Musical mastermind, BOOTS, is back with a new EP entitled #DARKDAZE and among the four gems is Delete Delete. Featuring friends and regular collaborators, Run The Jewels, as well as some beautiful vocals from Cristin Milioti, Delete Delete leaves its presence lingering long after the music draws to a close. The EP is available to buy now from all the usual spots.
A brand new Run The Jewels video appeared on my timeline last night, with no need for any fanfare because unlike 90% of trash rap videos that are doing the rounds, MIke & El have a long rich history of delivering entertaining visuals (see Legend Has It, Close Your Eyes…, Don’t Get Captured etc etc).
For Call Ticketron, the duo have created an apocalyptic, B-movie extravaganza, complete with panicked newsreaders and giant spiders. It is coming up to a year since the third RTJ instalment landed in our laps, but a tweet from El-P earlier in the week signalled that RTJ4 was en route, so stay tuned for more on that. New track from Statik Selektah, taken from his forthcoming album, 8. The New York-based producer has enlisted the plentiful skills of mic murderers, El-P & Killer Mike, on Put Jewels On It and as usual the two MCs seem to push each other to bring their best to the beat. The album is due for release on 8 Decmber and if you pre-order now, you get Put Jewels On It right away.
El-P mentioned on Twitter a few weeks ago that there was an RTJ remix on the way, featuring a British MC. I’ve been speculating ever since and the general consensus between me and everyone who put their twopence in was that it would be a grime MC, a) cos we know El is a big fan of the genre and b) cos if it was anyone from UK hip hop, its likely something would have come on to my radar already. Run The Jewels continue to up the ante with each new video they release and this latest one is raising the bar even higher. The visual for Don’t Get Captured sees an animated Mike and El manoeuvring their way through a particularly twisted take on a haunted house funfair ride, complete with the horrors of gentrification and police harassment. It’s also entirely populated by skeletons. Great production from Jacknife Films.
I already posted the audio clip for this joint from Big Boi’s latest album, but now he’s dropped a ludicrously slick and extravagant video to give it even more shine. Featuring Killer Mike, Jeezy, a suit of armour and a lion. The album, Boomiverse, is due out on 16 June on Epic Records.
Big Boi has a new album in the works and this week gave us another glimpse of what we can expect from the Dungeon Family OG. Kill Jill features Killer Mike and Jeezy. No release date for Boomiverse yet, but you can buy this single here.
Cuz Lightyear returns with a video for the tight track he dropped with Killer Mike at the start of the year. Pots N Pans is produced by SKUFL. Stay tuned for a new mixtape coming later in the year.
Run The Jewels love to do things without warning, like release an album or drop a new video. The latter happened just this week, with the arrival of some visual mischief for Legend Has It. The track was already one of my favourites due to the sheer number of quotables – on an album which is basically just one long quotable anyway – and this video is definitely worthy of accompanying it. Not only did yesterday produce a new RTJ single, it also finally gave us a release date for the long awaited third instalment from the duo. Legend Has It is probably my favourite of the leaks we’ve been treated to so far and the news that the album with feature heads like Danny Brown and Kamasi Washington, just makes the hype almost unbearable at this point. The official release date is now 3 January 2017, with more info here.
