I am extremely happy to share with you TWO new singles from the forthcoming Run The Jewels album. Having teased us with the fact that the album was completed towards the end of last year, El-P has been fending off tweet after tweet asking when the album will actually drop. Early 2020 was the initial confirmation and then that got wrangled down to a Spring release not long after. Now as we live through an unprecedented world event, we at least a suitable soundtrack as this week has seem the emergence of two tracks from RTJ4. The first track, Yankee And The Brave, was premiered in a hilarious IG Live session the other night and then Ooh LA LA has just received its first spin thanks to Zane Lowe. You can hear the first single above and the latest one is below, featuring some supreme cuts from Primo and a notorious sample courtesy of Greg Nice (apparently the first sample they could afford!). No official release date for RTJ4 yet, but stay tuned. Continue reading “Run The Jewels: Yankee And The Brave / Ooh LA LA”
Danny Brown has recently released a video for one of the arguable high points on his acclaimed uknowhatimsayin¿ album. 3 Tearz features his friends and previous collaborators, Run The Jewels, plus some fire production from JPEGMAFIA, who Danny has become close with over the last couple of years. The video was directed by Colin Read and features, in Danny’s words, “100 camera-wielding bruisers, some champagne & a couple of blunts”. uknowhatimsayin¿ is out now on Warp Records. Last year I did a round-up of some of my favourite insults from jewel runner and indie rap pioneer, El-P. Not content with ending it there, I have now tackled the larger and perhaps more rewarding task of selecting my favourite guest verses that he’s blessed us with over the last two decades or so. Before I started actually writing this, I had a pretty good idea in my head of how this Top 5 would end up looking, but it’s not until you start researching this sort of thing that you realise just how many tracks El-P has guested on across his career. So here we go with MY five favourite guest verses from the man himself (capitals on the ‘MY’, don’t @ me!).
A new Run The Jewels track emerged yesterday in the form of Let’s Go (The Royal We), which is part of the soundtrack for the new Venom film that recently arrived in cinemas. The track itself is a welcome return from the duo, as we patiently await the release of RTJ4. Alongside this one-off, El-P also recently completed work on the score for the forthcoming Fonzo movie, which is due for release next year.
Five years ago today this album was brought to life. I don’t think anyone at the time realised how big Run the Jewels would become in the years that followed, least of all El-P and Killer Mike themselves. The album was made for fun, according to El but it lead to them becoming one of the most popular hip hop acts in the world, with countless worldwide tours, a legion of die hard fans and even their own computer game characters. It also bred two more albums and hopefully a few more that are still to come. Continue reading “An Ode to Run the Jewels”
Run The Jewels and Rick & Morty collaborations are nothing new, thanks to a few clothing releases from Daylight Curfew over the past couple of years. But things moved up a notch on Friday when Adult Swim released a new video for RTJ’s Oh Mama, featuring the animated stars on a typically bloody mission to retrieve an unseen – but very shiny – item, a la Vincent and Jules in Pulp Fiction. In an ideal world the next step from here would be if Killer Mike and El-P actually got a cameo in a proper episode, but we’ll have to see about that. For now, make the most of this little beauty.
Musical mastermind, BOOTS, is back with a new EP entitled #DARKDAZE and among the four gems is Delete Delete. Featuring friends and regular collaborators, Run The Jewels, as well as some beautiful vocals from Cristin Milioti, Delete Delete leaves its presence lingering long after the music draws to a close. The EP is available to buy now from all the usual spots.
A brand new Run The Jewels video appeared on my timeline last night, with no need for any fanfare because unlike 90% of trash rap videos that are doing the rounds, MIke & El have a long rich history of delivering entertaining visuals (see Legend Has It, Close Your Eyes…, Don’t Get Captured etc etc).
For Call Ticketron, the duo have created an apocalyptic, B-movie extravaganza, complete with panicked newsreaders and giant spiders. It is coming up to a year since the third RTJ instalment landed in our laps, but a tweet from El-P earlier in the week signalled that RTJ4 was en route, so stay tuned for more on that. New track from Statik Selektah, taken from his forthcoming album, 8. The New York-based producer has enlisted the plentiful skills of mic murderers, El-P & Killer Mike, on Put Jewels On It and as usual the two MCs seem to push each other to bring their best to the beat. The album is due for release on 8 Decmber and if you pre-order now, you get Put Jewels On It right away.
El-P mentioned on Twitter a few weeks ago that there was an RTJ remix on the way, featuring a British MC. I’ve been speculating ever since and the general consensus between me and everyone who put their twopence in was that it would be a grime MC, a) cos we know El is a big fan of the genre and b) cos if it was anyone from UK hip hop, its likely something would have come on to my radar already.
