A fitting video for one of the more understandably anticipated tracks from Sonnyjim’s recent album with The Purist. Barz Simpson not only features a guest appearance from Jay Electronica, but also a verse from the much mourned legend, MF DOOM. You hear a lot of rappers labelling their upcoming videos as movies, but that’s exactly the energy that we’re dealing with here. ABOVEGROUND is a master of this approach and as usual he manages to pack a lot of visual punches into just under 4 minutes of film. No spoilers, see for yourself above. DJ Yoda: Jay Electronica x MF DOOM – A Written Doom (Stream)
The release of Jay Electronica’s long-awaited album caused plenty of discussions online, as you would expect from an album that had been under scrutiny long before it was ever given life. Many fans were thrilled, proclaiming it the year’s best, if not THE best, album after only a few hours. Other listeners were disappointed, with a strong contingent saying Elec was out-rapped by Jay Z. And then we had those like DJ Yoda who were simply confused by the album. Production choices didn’t make sense and the fact that Jay Z was so prominent was a further disappointment. Yoda even tweeted about a fantasy replacement project, with DOOM on production. And in typical Yoda fashion, that’s exactly what he made happen soon after. So below you can hear A Written Testimony, minus the Jay Z appearances, plus production from Metal Fingers himself. MF DOOM ft. Jay Electronica: True Lightyears
Check out the second release from DOOM’s new stack of tracks, which Adult Swim are drip feeding us for the next 15 weeks. This is the finished version of the collab with Jay Electronica, in all its flute-laden glory and also the signal that a new KMD album is en route as well, although I will not be holding my breath.
