Time for me to play catch up as I finally get round to shining some light on the upcoming new release from Vice Beats. The Bristol-based producer has been working on a Dilla focused project for the last seven years and now it is finally nearing the release date. The project is a reworking of the classic Suite For Ma Dukes by Miguel Atwood-Ferguson, with Vice bringing a whole bunch of talented souls into the fold, including Jaz Kahina and Nutty P. The whole project is due for release next month, so expect to hear a lot more about it then, but for now enjoy this taster. The video was made by Sam Bridges. Pre-orders for the vinyl edition are available now. Continue reading “Vice Beats ft. Jaz Kahina & Nutty P: Bring It Back”

Phat Kat ft. La Peace: It Don’t Get No Liver Than This
Detroit underground legend and J Dilla favourite, Phat Kat, is reissuing his 2007 Carte Blanche album. Phat Kat said that the decision to reissue was made “because it was put out right before the internet blew up, so it never really got to a lot of listeners. And it was a really good project that slipped through the cracks”.
Along with the reissue, he has also dug up a previously unreleased track for us to savour. It Don’t Get No Liver Than This is produced by Dilla and features fellow Detroit MC, La Peace. Originally recorded in 1997, it is one of two Dilla-produced bonus tracks on the updated version, alongside World Premier. Continue reading “Phat Kat ft. La Peace: It Don’t Get No Liver Than This”

J Dilla ft. Nas: The Sickness
This track featuring the killer combo of Dilla and Nas on a Madlib beat, was doing the rounds a few weeks ago, but now the good folks at Mass Appeal have given it the video treatment too. The Sickness is a bonus track lifted from Dilla’s latest posthumous release The Diary, which is available to buy on iTunes now.
