Good to see a video surfacing for one of my favourite tracks from YBN Cordae’s debut LP. RNP sees the NC rapper going back to back with Anderson Paak, over a funk driven beat from J. Cole. The video draws on that funk feel, with the duo transported back to mid-70’s New York. The Lost Boy is out now on all the usual platforms.
Rumours of new music from Guru and Premier – their first fresh material in 16 years – were sparked this week, when Preemo posted a video of a voicemail from Nas, in which the NY rapper said he heard that a new Gang Starr album was being prepared. Then a couple of days later, this new track emerged, sending the online rap community into meltdown. The track touches on subjects that seem all the more poignant given the circumstances. It is definitely a positive to hear something previously unheard from the legendary duo and the addition of J Cole is a nice touch, but it does feel like something is lacking from the finished product. Maybe it’s just the underlying sadness of knowing Guru’s gone, that taints my enjoyment, but it is still a new Gang Starr track and that is something I’m thankful for.
Royce is already hot on the heels of PRhyme 2 with a solo album called Book of Ryan. Boblo Boat is the first track to be taken from the project and is setting the bar pretty high, as he brings in J. Cole for a feature. The track is produced by Cool & Dre and 808 Ray. Pre-orders for the album are available here, with the release date scheduled for 4 May.
