Intriguing project from High Focus, as Coops’ favourite, Talos, releases his debut solo EP. I say intriguing because if this first taste is anything to go by, it signals a shift away from the reliable hip hop parameters that have rightfully earned HF their legions of fans. This is a heavily jazz influenced track, made even more apparent by the appearance of Nubya Garcia, the London-based jazz saxophonist and composer. Great start to the EP and it’s definitely piqued my interest for the rest of the project. You can stream/download the Lowlight EP at all the usual spots.

Good to see one of the high points from Ocean Wisdom’s recent sophomore album getting the video treatment. Ting Dun features Wu Tang legend Method Man, who brings some suitable double-time flows to the proceedings, over a tidy beat from Basquiat. The video was made by AboveGround. Wizville is out now on High Focus.

As Fliptrix gears up to release his latest album, he has treated us to another new video. New Breath is produced by Chemo and the video was made by Potent Funk favourites, Spin City Visuals. INEXHALE is due out on High Focus on 24 August.

Fresh video from Coops to start the week off right. Mac N Cheese is taken from his recent No Brainer project and is produced by Eahwee. Great video too, paying homage to Spike Jonze’s classic video for Drop by The Pharcyde. No Brainer is out now on High Focus Records.

As we move closer towards Fliptrix’s album release date, the High Focus MD treats us to another taster from the project. Bagging Up Music sees Fliptrix connecting with the mighty Chemo, as well as This & That Media on video duties. The INEXHALE album is due out on High Focus on 24 August.

As I mentioned last week, the infamous Ramson Badbonez is back with a new album and Bloodsplat is the next track to be lifted from it. He goes in on the horrorcore angle, which won’t be everyone’s cup of tea, but his dexterity on the mic is as on point as ever. Not sure who produced the track, but it’s same sample that Dike used in Don’t Make Me by Lee Scott – one for my fellow geeks. The video was made by Luca Bowles. Jason Bonez is out now on High Focus Records.

Badbonez is back and he’s bringing with him a new album. High Focus announced the imminent arrival of Jason Bonez the other day and now we have a new video to get us all in the mood. The album draws on inspiration from Friday the 13th, so expect his lyricism to be as raw as ever. Lock Your Doors is produced by Dr Zygote and Jazz T. The album is due for release on 25 May.

It was announced recently that High Focus head honcho, Fliptrix, is returning with a new album, following on from 2016’s Patterns of Escapism. It’s Like That is the first offering from the new project and sees Fliptrix team up with Birmingham-based producer, Joe Corfield, as well as Aboveground on video duties. The single is available to download/stream now and stay tuned for more info on the INEXHALE LP coming soon.

High Focus’s newest recruit has finally blessed us with his debut album on the label, No Brainer. The album has been well received, which makes sense given the strength of the lead singles, including the latest one, Pass The Mic. The track features North London MC, Rexx, as well as label mates, Fliptrix and Leaf Dog, with Talos once again handling the production. No Brainer is available now from the High Focus store.

In case, like me, you spent last month half asleep, you may have missed this new mixtape from Ramson Badbonez. Featuring a whole bunch of talented cats, alongside the ample skills of Badbonez himself, the project is compiled of tracks, remixes and features that the London MC has been involved with over the years. Jam Baxter, Twizzy, Rewd Adams and Micall Parknsun are just some of the voices that crop up throughout the mix, which clocks in at over an hour long and is available now for free. You can also stream it below. Read the rest of this entry »
