A great selection of music here, as First Word Records wheel out their latest end of year compilation. For Two Syllables, DJ Gilla compiled a number of tracks that have been released by First Word artists over the last 12 months, including gems from Don Leisure, Darkhouse Family and 14KT, as well as a brand new song from Manchester soul-rap duo, Children of Zeus. You can stream the selection in full below and free downloads are available via Bandcamp.

All round beat supremo and friend of the blog, HashFinger, has very kindly donated a bunch of download codes for his latest album, Dandelions. If you checked my posts over the last couple of weeks then you will probably already have sampled some of what the album had to offer, but for those of you still in the dark, it’s another sample-heavy venture as the Bradford producer taps into a few sources, including old jazz albums and radio shows. To cop your free download simply copy one of the codes below and then head to https://hashfinger.bandcamp.com/yum. It’s a first come first serve basis though and once they’re done that’s it, so be quick if you want in on the action. The album is also available on Spotify for those who prefer their music streamed, as well as a tasty vinyl edition for you wax fiends.

A rough and ready, yet still banging beat tape from Strange Neighbour, as he samples the hell out of a Bollywood film score DVD he found in a charity shop. You can stream the tape in full below and you can grab a free download via Revorg Records. Continue reading “Strange Neighbour: Project India (Stream)”
New mixtape from Ramson Badbonez, an MC who is more than capable of taking on some of hip hop’s greatest producers and making their beats his own. This time round he is drawing on DOOM’s great legacy, specifically his Special Herbs Collection. There are six tracks to savour, all mixed and mastered by the OG Jazz T, and it’s available as a free download. You can stream it below and downloads can be found here. Continue reading “Ramson Badbonez: BADOOM”
In case, like me, you spent last month half asleep, you may have missed this new mixtape from Ramson Badbonez. Featuring a whole bunch of talented cats, alongside the ample skills of Badbonez himself, the project is compiled of tracks, remixes and features that the London MC has been involved with over the years. Jam Baxter, Twizzy, Rewd Adams and Micall Parknsun are just some of the voices that crop up throughout the mix, which clocks in at over an hour long and is available now for free. You can also stream it below. Continue reading “Ramson BadBonez: Ramson BadBonez & Company (Stream)”
In case you didn’t know, among the abundance of excellent albums that surfaced this year, there was another gem from Nashville-based producer, L’Orange. The Ordinary Man included some great features from cats like Blu, Elzhi, Del and Koreatown Oddity, nestled in between a selection of L’Orange’s quality instrumental works. If that was the shot, then this new mini medley is the chaser. Imposter Instrumentals is billed by Mello Music Group as a “postscript to ‘The Ordinary Man’ and continues dancing the fluttering fringe of illusion.”. It is available to stream below, but then head over to Bandcamp where you can cop a free download too Continue reading “L’Orange: Imposter Instrumentals”
Ray Vendetta takes us back again to the golden age of mixtapes, by dropping an actual mixtape of him firing off lyrical rounds over a nice selection of instrumentals. There are beats from DOOM, Large Pro, Hi-Tek, Muggs and a whole load more. As usual with Vendetta, this is just the prelude to an official full length project which will be coming soon, this time with #TheWinners producer, Giallo Point. You can stream the mixtape below and you can grab a free download over on Bandcamp. Continue reading “Ray Vendetta: Verse Murder – The Dub Banquet”
A short but sweet (and hard) track from Greensboro MC, CASTLE, as he brings his lyrical a-game to Swords & Alchemy. The beat will be familiar to some as Alchemist’s wonderfully titled, Muscular Infant. You can stream the track below, with free downloads available over on Bandcamp. Continue reading “CASTLE: Swords & Alchemy”
I love it when projects get released without any real prior warning. Take the third instalment of the exquisite Lice series, which Aesop Rock and Homeboy Sandman have been treating us to for the last couple of years. Friday saw its arrival without much hype building, except for an IG post from Aesop Rock, which pictured him and Sand with the caption “What are you doing Friday? #3”. Nice gift from Public Enemy to commemorate their 30 years in the game. Last week Chuck D tweeted that the group were releasing a free album, as a thank you to the fans who have supported them throughout the years. Nothing Is Quick In The Desert is 13 tracks deep and shows the group have lost little of their ferocity since their debut, Yo! Bum Rush The Show, way back in 1987. You can stream the album below, with downloads available here. Continue reading “Public Enemy: Nothing Is Quick In The Desert”
