A brand new Run The Jewels video appeared on my timeline last night, with no need for any fanfare because unlike 90% of trash rap videos that are doing the rounds, MIke & El have a long rich history of delivering entertaining visuals (see Legend Has It, Close Your Eyes…, Don’t Get Captured etc etc).
For Call Ticketron, the duo have created an apocalyptic, B-movie extravaganza, complete with panicked newsreaders and giant spiders. It is coming up to a year since the third RTJ instalment landed in our laps, but a tweet from El-P earlier in the week signalled that RTJ4 was en route, so stay tuned for more on that. New track from Statik Selektah, taken from his forthcoming album, 8. The New York-based producer has enlisted the plentiful skills of mic murderers, El-P & Killer Mike, on Put Jewels On It and as usual the two MCs seem to push each other to bring their best to the beat. The album is due for release on 8 Decmber and if you pre-order now, you get Put Jewels On It right away.
El-P mentioned on Twitter a few weeks ago that there was an RTJ remix on the way, featuring a British MC. I’ve been speculating ever since and the general consensus between me and everyone who put their twopence in was that it would be a grime MC, a) cos we know El is a big fan of the genre and b) cos if it was anyone from UK hip hop, its likely something would have come on to my radar already. Run The Jewels continue to up the ante with each new video they release and this latest one is raising the bar even higher. The visual for Don’t Get Captured sees an animated Mike and El manoeuvring their way through a particularly twisted take on a haunted house funfair ride, complete with the horrors of gentrification and police harassment. It’s also entirely populated by skeletons. Great production from Jacknife Films.
El-P is many things to many people – producer extraordinaire, independent rap pioneer, deli owner, friend of cats, social commentator, high as fuck Twitter user… the list goes on. He’s also got some really strong insults. A good insult is as much a part of rap as bad spelling and squatting in photos, and there have been many purveyors of quality disses over the years. Run The Jewels love to do things without warning, like release an album or drop a new video. The latter happened just this week, with the arrival of some visual mischief for Legend Has It. The track was already one of my favourites due to the sheer number of quotables – on an album which is basically just one long quotable anyway – and this video is definitely worthy of accompanying it. Not only did yesterday produce a new RTJ single, it also finally gave us a release date for the long awaited third instalment from the duo. Legend Has It is probably my favourite of the leaks we’ve been treated to so far and the news that the album with feature heads like Danny Brown and Kamasi Washington, just makes the hype almost unbearable at this point. The official release date is now 3 January 2017, with more info here.
I never really want to get too political on here, plus I think at this point we have all made our thoughts about this new realm of fear we seem to be entering pretty clear. None more so than Run the Jewels, who last night released a new song called 2100, featuring their friend and collaborator Boots. The sentiment is as strong as ever, as you will hear below. Continue reading “Run the Jewels ft. Boots: 2100”→
So Adult Swim just casually dropped off the first single from the forthcoming third installment from Run The Jewels. The rumour mill has been putting in work over recent weeks, as people try to guess when the album will actually see the light of day. Well now we are all one step closer to the fact. Have a listen to Talk To Me below and cop a free download over at the Adult Swim site. Continue reading “Run The Jewels: Talk To Me”→
I don’t think anyone could quite believe their eyes and ears when a new Zack De La Rocha song breached our lives yesterday. Not only is it the first solo material from Zack that has actually made it to reality, but he’s also roped in El-P to produce the track. A solo LP is scheduled to see the light of day in 2017, so watch out for that.
