If you follow Lee Scott on Facebook, you might have noticed he’s recently started posting up some of his favourite classic rap albums and urging his younger fans to go and explore them if they’re not already familiar. Me and Lee have had a few little rap related chats of our own in the past and so I thought I’d use the current situation as an opportunity to pick his brains about his favourite rappers from back in the day, plus a few other little questions here and there. So via Twitter DMs, we delved into a whole bunch of original talent, including Redman, Likwit Crew, Company Flow and The Cenobites (the title of this piece is a reference to their track, How The Fuck You Get A Deal). To be honest we could have gone on a lot longer, so maybe we’ll try and squeeze another one out before normality returns. For now though, get stuck into this geeky conversation.
Earlier this year we were treated to the release of a new album from Duck Down veterans, Smiff-N-Wessun, as they teamed up with 9th Wonder and The Soul Council for The All. Ocean Drive is the latest single to be taken from the album, with Khrysis handling production duties and a great feature from Philly legend, Musiq Soulchild. The All is available to buy now over at the Duck Down store.
It’s been almost 16 years since Black Moon’s last album but that is soon to change, as the NY veterans prepare to release Rise Of Da Moon. Creep Wit Me is the first reveal from the album and features production from Da Beatminerz, who are the brains behind the beats on the full project. No fixed date yet, but the full release is scheduled for some point in the summer.
A bit of that raw New York flavour now, as Rim drops off his latest video for Caught Sleeping. Featuring production from Jon Glass, the track is also available to stream over on SoundCloud.
Smif-N-Wessun today released their brand new album, featuring exclusive production from 9th Wonder and The Soul Council. Following on from a slick performance for the NPR Tiny Desk series, the Duck Down duo seem to have found a new lease of life as this is their first full-length release since their 2011 project with Pete Rock. You can hear one of the lead singles above, which features Rapsody and Musiq SoulChild, plus the full album is available to stream below. Continue reading “Smif-N-Wessun ft. As I reported at the end of last month, a new Sean Price album was looming thanks to a collaboration with Philly producer, Small Professor. 86 Witness arrived in full on Friday and serves as a worthy addition to P’s weighty back catalogue. As alluded to in the title, the album is a homage to 1986 so expect a lot of timely references in the track names and beyond. Unlike some posthumous projects, 86 Witness has a really solid flow to it and is devoid of the clunky sound that plagues other releases made in a similar fashion. ’86 Witness is the long-awaited collaboration between the late great, Sean Price and Career Crooks producer, Small Professor. According to Duck Down the album has been years in the making, but now we are finally reaching the release date and if the first leak is anything to go by, we are in for a treat. John Gotti features a blistering list of MCs, as P is joined by AG Da Coroner, Guilty Simpson and Your Old Droog, accompanied by a suitably rugged beat from Small Pro. The rest of the album boasts a similar array of talented guests, including Zilla Rocca, Quelle Chris and ELUCID. Pre-orders for ’86 Witness are available now and you can stream John Gotti below. Yesterday marked the third anniversary of the untimely passing of the much loved, Sean Price. In honour of the great man, Duck Down released a new video for one of the tracks from his acclaimed 2017 album, Imperius Rex. Apartheid features fellow label mates, Buckshot and Steele, with production from Crummie Beats. Imperius Rex is out now on Duck Down Music.
Statik Selektah has a new album coming out next month and yesterday gave us another glimmer of what to expect from the project, thanks to the release of No. 8. The track features a blistering set of bars from Griselda’s finest, Conway and Westside Gunn, as well as Statik’s regular collaborator, Termanology. The album is released in full on 8 December, with pre-orders available now.
Sean Price’s posthumous fourth studio album was released to acclaim this week and coincided with the NY rapper’s second anniversary. Imperius Rex has been well received by fans of P and a couple of videos have already been peeled off the project, including this one for Dead or Alive. The track was produced by The Adept and features not only a mean hook from P’s wife, Bernadette but there are also a few cameos in the video, including one from Michael Rapaport. Imperius Rex is out now on Duck Down Music.
