New music from Helsinki Booze Merchants, as they announce the release of their debut album. While the name might not be familiar in this form, their individual IDs will no doubt be, as the crew is made up of Luca Brazi, Benny Diction and Mnsr Frites, who have worked as solo artists and on plenty of collaborations together over the years. This latest offering is entirely produced by Brazi, as well as two remixes from Chemo and Chuck Enzo chucked in for good measure. You can sample a couple of the tracks below, including that Enzo remix, and then get set for the full release of the album, Film Poster Whips, on 1 August. There is also a Qrates push to get a vinyl edition made, so get involved with that if you can. More info here. Continue reading “Helsinki Booze Merchants: Film Poster Whips”
Brand new visuals from the ever-elusive Chuck Enzo, as he releases a video for one of his contributions to the recent Group BraCil compilation. The stop-motion animation for The Living Tribunal was done in-house by the suspiciously talented, Norm Oddity. The compilation, happiness, we’re all in this together, is out now on both digital and vinyl.
New sounds from the Group BraCil camp as they release their new label compilation. happiness, we’re all in this together is a fine blend of old and new, as the rising label hit us with tracks from the likes of Verbz and Chuck Enzo, while also bringing new members to the fore with new material from Spectacular Diagnostics and Don Leisure. It serves as a fine showcase for a label who have consistently proven their worth with each new release, and who look set to continue blurring the lines between genres as their roster gains strength. You can hear the album in full below, with physical and digital versions available on Bandcamp. Continue reading “Group BraCil: happiness, we’re all in this together (Stream)”
When it was first announced that King Kashmere and Joker Starr – two highly respected and established artists within UK hip hop – were joining forces to form GAWD Status, my interest was undoubtedly piqued. But I was not expecting it to reach the experimental, psychedelic heights it did. Firmamentum earned them a lot of much deserved critical praise from far and wide, including from the good people at BBC 6 Music. Not long ago, Joker Starr and King Kash announced they were doing a Q&A session on their Instagram stories, to which I jokingly replied that I might try to turn the opportunity into an interview. I say jokingly, but I had been speaking to Kash about doing an interview for ages and so when they both replied telling me to go for it, I couldn’t resist. So what follows is the result of a casual back and forth via Instagram DMs, over the last week or so. We discuss the old days, the 6 Music angle and how GAWD Status came to be, among other things. Their album is also available to stream at the end. Continue reading “GAWD Status: Interview”
Group Bracil manage to sneak another dope release in before the year is over, thanks to this new project from Chuck Enzo. Chuck has already had a hand in some of the label’s other releases this year, including the production on Tightrope, which was one of the highlights of Verbz’s superb Pathways album. On Destructo Disc, Enzo breathes new life into tracks from the likes of Anderson Paak, Migos, Kemba and 50 Cent, with a series of innovative remixes that highlight the dexterity and vision behind his production. You can stream Destructo Disc below and downloads are available through Group Bracil. The artwork was done by Matt Littler.
Pathways is the latest arrival from Verbz and it’s another win for the Croydon-based MC, as he finds a new home on flourishing label, Group Bracil. Following on from his single producer album, alongside Mr Slipz in 2017, this latest project features a bevy of talented beat-makers, including Morriarchi, Norm Oddity, Chuck Enzo and 2Late. There are also some notable guest spots too from CLBRKS, NuphZed, Bador and BaggE. There’s a heavy jazz feel to the album, with Verbz taking his voice into new territory, while still maintaining the level of lyricism that has made him one of my favourite MCs at work right now. You can listen to Pathways below and limited edition physicals are available on Bandcamp.
