Double-header from Joe Publik, as I play catch up with the Isle of Wight MC’s recent releases. First up is Head Nod Hip Hop, which dropped a couple of weeks ago and sees Joe teaming up with two of the Verbal Highz gang, Chillman and G00SE, to great effect. The video comes courtesy of Sektion Red. And yesterday we were treated to Joe’s latest video, which has some more excellent features, in the form of Split Prophets OG, Res One and Out Da Ville legend, Scorzayzee. The video for Military Minded was made by Double or Nothing. Both tracks are self-produced and the cuts were supplied by Willz of Steel. They are taken from Joe’s debut solo LP, Stubborn Vectis.

New video from easily one of the hardest working people on the UK scene, as Habitus continues to deliver the gems from his forthcoming album. On Chasing Careers, the bilingual, Bristol-based MC is joined by friend and regular collaborator, Chillman, as well as fellow Bristol artist, Bella Soul. The video was made by Sektion Red. More news on the album soon.

Nice selection of tracks from In The Balance, featuring the wealth of talent that makes up their current roster. Regular visitors to the blog will most likely be familiar with some of the tracks already, but having them all compiled together in one place is a great reminder of just how much quality music the label has been responsible for since its inception back in 2015. I remember first hearing Verb T rap when his track Showbitchness was included on a Low Life Records compilation, back in 2003. Since then he has been a constant in my relationship with UK hip hop, thanks to his association with High Focus, most notably as part of The Four Owls, as well as a string of projects with the likes of Pitch 92 and Illinformed. I spoke with him recently about a number of things including maintaining his longevity, setting up his own label and his ongoing struggles with Crohn’s Disease.

Fresh heat on a rainy day from Chillman and G00SE, with the aptly titled Cold Weather. This is the first cut from the duo’s upcoming album and also features production from G00SE. The video was made by Parallel Media. The track is also available to stream and download on the usual platforms.

New video from the Verbal Highz gang, filmed during their recent invasion at Nozstock. The track features G00SE, Entra-P and Coosie on the mic, with production coming from Chillman. The video was made by UKHH.com.

Verbal Highz representative G00SE recently hooked up with Verb T’s burgeoning label, In The Balance Records and proceeded to release his debut solo project. Living Poets Society provides a perfect snapshot of why the Bristol-based MC has become one to watch, with his brand of frenetic yet calculated wordplay taking centre stage. The album (EP? Thanks Kanye) is produced in its entirety by G00SE, another chance for him to flex his hip hop muscle and conjure up the ideal backdrops for his lyrical acrobatics. Read the rest of this entry »

Strong debut from South West rap duo, Pupils of the Clock and their Timless album. The pair – Tok and Lazy Eyez – have been steadily building their skills over the past few years and have now reached the point of bringing their music to the critical masses; suffice it to say it was worth the wait.
The list of production credits is testament to their skills on the mic, with names like Benaddict, Chillman and Wundrop all bringing their beats to the project. The result is 12 tracks of solid rap, laced with confidence beyond their years. Looking forward to hearing how they progress from here. You can stream Timeless below and downloads are available via Bandcamp. Read the rest of this entry »

I’ve been struggling to write more than a couple of paragraphs for the past few months. Various reasons, too boring or personal to go into now, but it does mean I have failed to shine a light on some decent projects that have been given life in the interim. I wanted to do a bit of a catch up to make amends for my slack attitude and also to bring some thoroughly good music to your attention. Read the rest of this entry »

Laid back sounds on the new joint from Obadiah and Chillman. The two MCs unite over a nice lo-fi beat from Moff, with Badhabitz providing the cuts. The video was shot by This & That Media. The track is available to buy now via In The Balance Records.
