Next month on 18 April, as is now customary in Bristol, High Focus will roll into town en masse to celebrate their 9th birthday. Following on from last year’s success, once again they will takeover the SWX nightclub which is situated bang in the middle of town and will bring with them a selection of the finest artists that their ever-increasing roster has to offer.
On the bill this year we have performances from The Four Owls, Jam Baxter, Coops, Onoe Caponoe, Ed Scissor, Strange U, Ronnie Bosh and Pitch 92 as well as their latest signing Datkid, plus loads more MCs and DJs to get the place jumping. If you’ve ever had the pleasure of reaching one of these events in the past, then you will know what to expect and that what to expect is something special.
As is also customary, I have the opportunity for one of you lucky so-and-sos to win free entry for you and a faithful companion on the night itself. All you have to do to win is answer the following question:

What is the name of the forthcoming album from Datkid and Leaf Dog?

To enter, stick the answer in an email along with your full name and I will pick a winner at random on 1 April. The email address is allgingereverything@gmail.com. For the full line-up check the poster above and if you’d rather invest in some tickets instead, you can find them here.

Fresh out today comes the latest solo release from Four Owls MC, BVA. Despite keeping himself busy with The Four Owls, Brother of the Stone and his label duties at RLD, this is the first solo project we have had since his 2014 Be Very Aware LP. Peep the EP features four brand new tracks produced by Illinformed and Leaf Dog, with BVA’s pen-game and wordplay as sharp as ever. You can stream the EP below with downloads available via RLD Records. Read the rest of this entry »

Big things from Brothers of the Stone as they return with their new album, Return to Stoney Island. It’s been three years since Leaf Dog, BVA and Illinformed released their self-titled debut album and during the hiatus the trio have been busy with various solo projects, and other crew affiliated releases. They have also found time to connect with some of rap’s finest, as Return to Stoney Island sees the Brothers being joined by Inspectah Deck, MOP and Young Zee, as well as recent rising voice, Rome Streetz. UK features come from regular sparring partners, Eric the Red and Smellington Piff. The album is available to stream below, plus there are CD and vinyl options over on the RLD store. It’s not long now until the new album from Brothers of the Stone is unleashed and last week saw the release of the next glimpse at what it holds in store. Overseers sees Leaf Dog, BVA and Illinformed uniting with none other than Wu favourite, Inspectah Deck. The video was made by Jess Daly. Return to Stoney Island is due for release on 4 December on RLD Records.

Big single from the upcoming album from Brothers of the Stone aka Leaf Dog, BVA and Illinformed. Leaf has a particular talent for drafting in some of rap’s bigger names for features and Overseers is no expection, as the trio are joined by Wu legend, Inspectah Deck. The track is lifted from Return to Stoney Island, which is due for release on RLD Records on 4 December.

It was already in the mid-20’s when I rolled down to this year’s High Focus Block Party in Bristol and it was only going to get hotter, given the days running up to the event. Last year’s party had been a smash and this year looked set to at least rival it, if not surpass it. Doors opened at 2pm so I got down there at about 3pm and already had to deal with the huge queue that had formed; a teeming mass of the new generation of UK hip hop fans all fully loyal to the HF brand (and all of whom I’m pretty sure I was old enough to be their dad). Check out the next track from Leaf Dog’s new album to be given the video treatment. The Reminder features fellow Four Owls member, BVA, as well as verse from the Ultramagnetic OG himself, Kool Keith. Dyslexic Disciple is out now on High Focus.

I had to write ‘everyone’ cos I literally cannot fit all the MCs names into the title. 20 rappers, eight bars a piece. Safe to say this is a monumental track from Leaf Dog, as he continues to build on the intrigue for his forthcoming album, Dyslexic Disciple. Phi Life Cypher, Smellington Piff, BVA, Cracker Jon, Jehst, Jack Jetson, Dirty Dike, Verb T, Sonnyjim, Mysdiggi, Klashnekoff, Fliptrix, Bill Shakes, Eric The Red, King Kashmere, Remus, Task Force and DJ Sammy B-Side providing the cuts. Pre-orders for the album are available here.

The videos keep coming from the latest Fliptrix album, with That’s You being the most recent addition. It features his masked collaborators, The Four Owls, as well as another solid beat from Illinformed. The album is available now from all the usual spots.

Realised I haven’t posted anything from The Four Owls for a while, which is pretty shameful considering they dropped their album recently. To make up for it, here is the latest video from that album, featuring label mate Dirty Dike, for the track Assassination. It is produced by Leaf Dog and the video was made by Tom Jarret. Natural Order is available to buy now from High Focus.
