More fire on this already scorching day, thanks to the new track from one of my favourite Bristol producers, DROG Beats, as he delivers the outrageously filthy, DROP. You might remember talking up DROG before, because he was the guy behind some of Buggsy’s most memorable beats and he made most of them when he was only 15. Talent for real. Streams of DROP are also available.
Let’s keep the levels raised with this next one, as the latest single from the forthcoming Axel Holy album is given life. For those still unaware, Axel is the rap alter ego of veteran UK producer, Baileys Brown, and soon he is releasing his debut full-length under that guise. This latest track, Rah Nah, is a self-produced banger, which looms up out of the shadows and gives us further insight into Holy’s world. The album, Wonderworld, is due for release on 29 May via Split Prophets Records.
Bristol keeps the rap flag held high with another strong release from the city’s seemingly endless stash of talent, as Billy Whizz returns with his new solo EP. The DJ and producer has amassed a good circle of collaborators over the years and this is demonstrated to superb effect on Kobra Kai Style. Among the instrumental joys we find thought provoking rap joints, like the Wish Master assisted Moves I Make, and soul-drenched, horn-flecked bangers like Fire/Water, which features Bristol OG, Mylo Stone, and vocalist, Melissa Dawn. More weight is added to the EP’s appeal, thanks to two further appearances by Relly and G00SE. You can hear the full thing for yourself below, with downloads and physicals available via Bandcamp. Axel Holy kicks off the run-up to his debut LP, with this introductory track which welcomes us into this new but familiar world. Familiar because Holy is the rap alter ego of Bristol production don, Baileys Brown, who has already surfaced on a number of tracks over the years, including Baileys own Still Fresh LP. Wonderworld is his first official Axel Holy rap album though, with production handled by a select few kings from Baileys’ own circles. He also handles some of the production himself too, as you will hear in this video. I’ve been lucky enough to hear the album in its full glory and I can confirm it is an album worthy of the Baileys Brown pedigree. More news on that when it drops on Split Prophets Records. The video for Wonderworld Intro was made by Max Pearce.
A while ago I thought about starting a series of exclusive mixes for my blog, so I put the feelers out and got some great responses, but failed to capitalise on it at the time. However today, I can bring you what will hopefully be the first of a series, thanks to Bristol legend and all-round asset to the music scene, Koast. The Durkle Disco boss has knocked up a wild ride through what feels like a global showcase of grime, UK funky, dubstep and beyond, thanks to tracks emanating from the UK, Holland, France, Ghana, Nigeria, Burkina Faso, Congo and Brazil. It weighs in at 64 tracks and 96 minutes, kicking off with Bristol favourite, Snowie, before getting stuck into tracks from Kojey Radical, Naira Marley, Roska, Snowy, Zed Bias, Gabriel Waves and a whole lot more. You can find the full tracklist below, as well as the mix itself. As well as Tom’s Durkle Disco involvement and his DJ sets, Tom has also been a key player in the rise of SWU.FM, the new Bristol radio station which begins broadcasting shortly. For more information on what’s in store, you can find them on all socials as @swu.fm. Continue reading “Koast: Exclusive Mix”
A new video here from Bristol producer, Billy Whizz, as he starts the ball rolling for the release of his latest EP. On Forbidden Skill, he is joined by fellow Bristol resident and Verbal Highz MC, G00SE, who is put through a particularly rigorous workout by Merv Hembrough aka Mahd Hacka, before G00SE and Bill have a fight that rivals Sugar Ray vs. Thomas Hearns. The Kobra Kai Style EP is out soon on Official Recordings. The video was made by Dhack Media.
Bristol in full effect here, as Twizzy and Jinxsta introduce us to their forthcoming EP with the lead single, Salute The Cap. No strangers to the scene, or each other, Twizzy and Jinxsta have collaborated in various incarnations over the years, but this marks a return to the fore for Twizzy, who seems to have found a new lease of life on the mic. Combine this with the fact that the production is being handled in full by Chris Lucas – another of Bristol’s musical assets – we have all the ingredients for a very good project. Pre-orders for the First Word Last EP are available now, with the release set for 27 April.
Time for me to play catch up as I finally get round to shining some light on the upcoming new release from Vice Beats. The Bristol-based producer has been working on a Dilla focused project for the last seven years and now it is finally nearing the release date. The project is a reworking of the classic Suite For Ma Dukes by Miguel Atwood-Ferguson, with Vice bringing a whole bunch of talented souls into the fold, including Jaz Kahina and Nutty P. The whole project is due for release next month, so expect to hear a lot more about it then, but for now enjoy this taster. The video was made by Sam Bridges. Pre-orders for the vinyl edition are available now. Continue reading “Vice Beats ft. Jaz Kahina & Nutty P: Bring It Back”
Another great single from Bristol-based vocalist, Chikaya, as she conjures up more trappy future soul sounds with her elusive producer, on the aptly named Himalayas.
Highly entertaining new video from Wish Master, as he continues to polish off the gems from his Boom Bap To The Future album. Science sees the Bristol-based rapper playing both himself and an elderly lady called Blanche, in a riff that Eddie Murphy would be proud of. The video also features a number of cameos, including fellow Bristol lyricist, Buggsy, who finds himself having a smoke and drink with Wish on the moon. The whole thing has a great DIY B-Movie vibe about it, which only adds to the entertainment value. Science is produced by Baileys Brown and is lifted from BBTTF, which is out now on Official Recordings. Continue reading “Wish Master: Science”
