Afeni is the latest track to be lifted from Rapsody’s 2019 album, Eve. A celebration of black female power, each track was named and dedicated to an influential woman. Afeni, which samples Keep Ya Head Up and also features PJ Morton, is named after 2Pac’s mother, Afeni Shakur, who was an activist and prominent member of the Black Panthers. A remarkable woman, who managed to successfully prove her innocence during a trial in which she represented herself, while facing a 300 year sentence. She had no formal legal education and she was pregnant for the duration of the eight month trial. Afeni was produced by 9th Wonder and the album, Eve, is out now on Jamla Records. God Black/Black God is the latest single from the most recent Murs and 9th Wonder project – their seventh collaboration to date and arguably one of their strongest. Brighter Daze is out now on all the usual platforms.
A very welcome return for Rapsody as she delivers a brand new video, the first from her upcoming album. For Ibtihaj, the Snow Hill MC has drawn on inspiration from a 90’s classic, namely sampling GZA’s Liquid Swords, as well as getting the Wu Tang legend himself to drop a verse. There is more vocal assistance too from D’Angelo, as well as cameos from Mary J Blige and Roxanne Shante. The song is named in honour of Ibtihaj Muhammad, who was the first Muslim woman to wear a hijab while representing the US at the Olympics. Ibtihaj is produced by 9th Wonder and it’s taken from Eve, which is due for release on 23 August.
Murs and 9th Wonder have been in the lab together again, working on their seventh collaboration since they first rolled out Murs 3:16 – The 9th Edition, back in 2004. This week we were treated to the first video from the album, which features two tracks – Night Shift and Ga$ Station Gucci Belt. The former is produced by Kash of The Soul Council, who also provide beats for the project, with 9th himself on production on the latter. Two very different tracks, which make me very intrigued to hear how the full album plays out. The Iliad Is Dead And The Odyssey Is Over is due for release on 19 July.
Smif-N-Wessun today released their brand new album, featuring exclusive production from 9th Wonder and The Soul Council. Following on from a slick performance for the NPR Tiny Desk series, the Duck Down duo seem to have found a new lease of life as this is their first full-length release since their 2011 project with Pete Rock. You can hear one of the lead singles above, which features Rapsody and Musiq SoulChild, plus the full album is available to stream below. Continue reading “Smif-N-Wessun ft. Musiq SoulChild & Rapsody: Ocean Drive + Album Stream”
For almost as long as Black Thought has been rapping, his fans – and pretty much the entire hip hop world – have been clamoring for a solo project. Thought had begun working on a solo album a while back, but it was never given life and the idea of us ever getting to hear one from him became one of hip hop’s seemingly unattainable dreams. Even when it was announced a few weeks ago that he and 9th Wonder were working on a project together, it was half-jokingly assumed we’d never get to hear it either.
