On 14 October, for one night only, the mighty Mos Def will touch down at the Kentish Town Forum in London, to perform a retrospective of some of his classic material. Now performing under the name Yasiin Bey, it is safe to say that since he first came to our attention back in 1994 as part of UTD, he has become one of hip hop’s most respected voices.
This particular performance will see him team up with one of the most talented groups around, the Hypnotic Brass Ensemble. These guys have been steadily producing great music since 2004, including collaborations with the likes of MF Doom, Prince and Ghostface Killah. The group is comprised of eight brass players, all sons of the legendary jazz trumpeter, Phil Cohran.
Putting these two musical forces on stage at the same time is sure to create one of the most exciting performances of 2016 and thanks to the good folks at Soundcrash and Grassrootz, I have a pair of tickets to give away.
All you have to do to enter is answer the following question: What was the name of the album, released on Rhymesayers in 2009, that featured the Hypnotic Brass Ensemble? Send the answer, along with your full name, to allgingereverything@gmail.com. The closing date for the competition will be 1 October. In the meantime if you want to avoid disappointment and buy tickets, there are loads of links, plus more info on the performance, over at the Soundcrash site.
