Very pleased to finally see the release of the new album from Zilla Rocca & The Shadowboxers. No Vacation For Murder has been a long time coming, but it is very much worth the wait. Zilla Rocca, as regular visitors to my blog will know, is the godfather of noir hop, a strain of hip hop borne from hard-boiled detective novels, dames with more attitude than morals and bluesy backstreet bars.
With No Vacation For Murder, Zilla has created the perfect soundtrack for his noir hop world, using the theme of revenge to thread the album together. The production is suitably dark and rough, with beats from the likes of Blurry Drones, Floodwatch and Has-Lo, Zilla’s friend and frequent collaborator. He also appears on a couple of the tracks as an MC, including 47 Ronin, which features another Wrecking Crew affiliate, Curly Castro. The album is out now for your listening (and purchasing) pleasure, either as a digital download, or even better on CD, which comes with a free poster and variations on the album artwork, but they’re limited to 100 copies, so be quick.
